Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) Sepilok in Sabah

Exactly 8 a.m, someone was knocking my door. And I was like - what the?!! It's Saturday and I needed extra rest!! But I gave up sleeping anyway..coz I heard we're going somewhere - a place called RDC, which stands for Rainforest Discovery Centre, in Sandakan, Sabah. RDC is located in Sepilok and caters to the environmental education of the Sabah Rainforest. I'm so excited. I've been looking forward to this trip as I never been there before.

We started out at 9 a.m. Went for breakfast and then bought a new family camera. - most of this pictures was captured using the new Canon Ixus 105. We planned to start at the Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary. Unfortunately, tickets are all sold out for that time and we need to wait till 2 p.m. So, we decided to head to RDC instead.

reached the Orang Utan Sanctuary

dissapointed coz no tickets available till 2 p.m , took some early pics there before heading to RDC

Some of the 'dipterocarp' trees. It's stated that there are about 200 species of them in Sabah.

It's called Sterculia Magistophylla scientifically and Kalumpang Sarawak in Malay. Take a closer look, it's actually full of seeds..

There are many types and benefits of plants and they are categorized clearly here. For eg: Medicine Plants, Plants used in cooking, Fern Corner, Pitcher Plants and also The Gingers of Sabah.

Here are some of the flowers:

Xanthorrhoeaccae from Australia.

those are various types of cactus

rest - then back to the Orang Utan Sanctuary, Spent more than an hour here in RDC. great.
- been sweating a lot!

moments later...
walkway to the platform where we get to see those wild orang utans as they came out for lunch.

What to bring

Bring mosquito or insect repellent, an umbrella in case it rains. But you should try to leave all these things at the reception center as the other little monkeys can get up to no good and grab your bag with these things. If you want to bring your mobile phone, please keep it on silent mode. Binoculars are great here if you want a close up look at the Orang Utans.

Opening Hours of the Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary

  • Security Gate: Daily from 8.00am till 5.00pm
  • Reception & Ticketing Counter: Daily from 9.00am till 11.00am and 2.00pm till 3.30pm
  • Exhibition Hall: Daily (except Fridays) from 9.00am till 4.30pm
  • Main Center: Daily from 9.00am till 12.00pm and 2.00pm till 4.00pm Fridays 9.00am till 11.00am, 2.00pm till 4.00pm

we waited for the orang utans for sooo long..

okay....thats it I think.. too hot for more pictures...they sure look cute. Naughty monkeys..they stole the orang utans' food!

p.s: RDC also offers EE Programs for students. Quite a number of students (both local and foreign) have been participated in this Environmental Education Program. Well I think things like this are great as it attracts more local and international schools around the region to participate in.
